Viennese trumpet player Lorenz Raab continues to surprise as an artist with imaginative concepts and  an open outlook towards the future. In his unorthodox  band-projects “:xy band” and “BLEU” he proves this in remarkable continuity. His new quartet “expanded” is  a completely new formation of musical partners from all corners of Europe.

And what a line-up! All of them are extraordinary instrumentalists and well-known representatives of the improvised music scene in their home-countries and far beyond their borders. French Michel Godard (tuba, Serpent, bass) has made his mark on the imaginary folklore of his country. « Pumping » an irresistible pulse into these recordings, he releases the tuba blindfold from its reputation of  sluggishness and gives a deep  elastic base to the music.

The Swiss  ( African-born) Lucas Niggli is like a „Jack of all trades“ on the drums. He drives the band with a light-handed, cheeky flow to his compulsive grooves. Detailed, springy and rich in tone, he is much more than an average „ time-keeper“. Niggli and Godard: what a foundation for the „brass-section“ to take off! And so they do: with verve, ingenious irony and unconditional disport.

The Norwegian Eirik Hegdal from Trondheim – one of the gravitational centrepieces of the always new „Northern Jazz“,is perfectly cast in the stream of the tempo-sharp events. His fresh saxophone lines cross  heavily, roughly and in wise sensitivity with the imaginative shine of Lorenz Raab’s trumpet.

The resulting urgency spreads undisguised, as the music is always just below the surface. It may sound like a chorale or even  rockmusic, festive or haunting, but nevertheless it’s monolithic, as an entire piece. Meeting together in anthem or accelerating substantially: just no  treading water! A perfect ensemble of musicians, a Dreamteam of four absolutely equal individualists throws open the windows to let in some fresh air. Jazz must be exactly like this, if it does not want to smell strange….                                                                                                                                              Ulrich Steinmetzger
